Collectivity of Martinique celebrates the 36th anniversary of the OECS

French translation included

Martinique is celebrating the formation of the OECS 36 years ago, on 18th June 1981 with activities and sensitisations.  Seven countries signed the Treaty of Basseterre establishing the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States: Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint-Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines.

They have been followed by Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat and more recently Martinique as unified community capable of facing economic, social, financial and environmental challenges and capitalizing on regional and international opportunities. Martinique joined to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States in February 2015, thus becoming the first French speaking associated Member States of the OECS.

The accession of Martinique has led to deeper ties and the launch of ongoing projects in many areas such as medical cooperation, research and development in agriculture or regional trade to name but a few endeavours that has greatly benefited the OECS.

The Collectivity of Martinique has launched a campaign dedicated to the OECS aiming at sensitising and raising awareness on the Organisation. Communincation materials have been developed in honour of the anniversary with an online quiz competition in French from 12 to 19 of June enabling Martinicans to test their knowledge on the Organisation and the Caribbean to win some prizes.

An informative booklet will also be available to the public at the Collectivity of Martinique Headquarters and from the OECS Commission.

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is an International Organisation dedicated to economic harmonisation and integration, protection of human and legal rights, and the encouragement of good governance among independent and non-independent countries in the Eastern Caribbean. The OECS came into being on June 18th 1981, when seven Eastern Caribbean countries signed a treaty agreeing to cooperate with each other while promoting unity and solidarity among its Members. The Treaty became known as the Treaty of Basseterre, so named in honour of the capital city of St. Kitts and Nevis where it was signed. The OECS today, currently has eleven members, spread across the Eastern Caribbean comprising Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Martinique and Guadeloupe.
